Karlstejn Castle

A Gothic Castle built by Charles IV.,  King of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor from 1348-1355 to protect the imperial crown jewels and documents. The Karlstejn lies 40 km southwest of Prague.

A unique collection of 129 Gothic panel paintings by Master Theodoric depicting Christ´s heavenly army has been preserved in the most important part of the castle,the Chapel of St. Cross.

A replica of the St. Wenceslas Crown is on exhibit in the treasury.

The Big Tower is the main building at Karlstejn. Served as a residence and for defense and is linked by a narrow wooden bridge to the Marian Tower.

The last building inside  the castle walls is the Imperial Palace.
